304 vs 316 Stainless Steel Fasteners: How to Choose

Choosing between 304 and 316 stainless steel fasteners starts with the environment in which the parts will be used. Both grades are widely used, but their corrosion resistance differs.

For a purchasing team, the right choice should also account for assembly requirements, material specifications and inspection needs.

What Is the Main Difference?

316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to certain forms of corrosion, particularly pitting in chloride-containing environments.

304 stainless steel is commonly considered for general-purpose applications where exposure conditions are less aggressive.

However, neither grade is suitable for every environment. Temperature, chemicals, moisture and component design can all influence performance.

When Should You Consider 304 Fasteners?

304 may be an option for indoor hardware, furniture components and general machinery operating in suitable environments.

Before specifying it, review whether the assembly will be exposed to cleaning chemicals, persistent moisture or salt.

For custom parts, state the required grade on the drawing or purchase specification. “Stainless steel” alone does not clearly identify the material.

When Should You Consider 316 Fasteners?

316 is often considered where chloride exposure is a concern, including some coastal applications.

It should still be evaluated against the actual service conditions. A coastal installation exposed to salt deposits, trapped moisture or high temperatures may need a more detailed material review.

Selecting 316 does not remove the need for appropriate design, installation and maintenance.

Material Grade Is Only Part of the Specification

A suitable fastener must also fit and function correctly.

Confirm:

  • Thread size, pitch and thread requirements
  • Head shape and overall dimensions
  • Required mechanical properties
  • Surface condition and finish
  • Inspection and documentation requirements

Do not assume that changing from 304 to 316 automatically provides the required strength. Specify the relevant mechanical requirements separately.

What Should You Send with Your Enquiry?

Provide your drawing, material grade, quantity and application details. Identify any critical dimensions and explain whether material documentation is required.

If the grade has not been selected, describe the operating environment and ask for options to review.
